BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - The clock was winding down in regulation of a rain-soaked game at Vidas Field, and the visiting Delaware Blue Hens had just drawn a foul in the goal box. As they set up for a penalty kick, it appeared that Drexel's chances for a big conference victory were slim. The Blue Hens' Roberto Gimenez lined it up, reared back and laced a shot that sent the Dragons' Pentti Pussinen diving to his right. The sophomore goalkeeper has made several big saves over the past three games, but none was bigger than the one he came up with there, stonewalling Gimenez and preserving a 1-1 tie. The game would ultimately go into overtime, where the Dragons capitalized on their second chance in the game's 107th minute when Ken Tribbett scored off a perfectly-placed long pass from Tal Bublil to give the Dragons a golden goal and a 2-1 victory.
The game got off to a slow, slogging start in a pouring rain, with neither team able to get much going offensively in the first half. Drexel managed just six shots, while the Blue Hens got two. In the second half, however, the Blue Hens got on the board less than two minutes into the half when Gimenez sent a low ball skidding past the outstretched arms of Pussinen, diving to his left.
Drexel had an answer. In the 51st minute, Mark Donohue got free in the box and pounded a hard header in on Delaware goalkeeper Brandon Paul. Paul deflected it away but could not control it, and Michele Pataia quickly ripped it back in on net and past Paul, knotting the score at one.
The game remained tied for the rest of the half, with Delaware earning their penalty kick when Robert Liberatore was carded for a hard tackle in the box in the 82nd minute. Gimenez tried to go low and to the right of Pussinen, having already beaten him to the other side earlier in the game, but the Drexel keeper was on top of his game, and slammed the ball away. It actually caromed right back to Gimenez, but his second-chance shot sailed well over the crossbar and out of play.
With the rains continuing to intensify, neither team got much going through most of the overtime periods. Then, with less than three minutes to play in the second overtime, Delaware gained control deep in their own end and tried to feed the ball up front to their forwards. The pass was short, though, and was intercepted cleanly by Drexel defender Tal Bublil. With the Blue Hens sending their back line up to pressure the Drexel goal, Bublil quickly sent the ball back over their heads and led Ken Tribbett towards the Delaware goal.
When Tribbett gained control, only Paul stood between him and the net. The sophomore forward collected himself, got control, and calmly chipped the ball over Paul's head, bouncing it into the net for the game-winning goal.
The victory put Drexel's conference record at 2-2-1, and granted them their first consecutive victories of the season, having shut out Towson 2-0 on Saturday. Drexel will have another opportuntiy to move up the CAA standings on Sunday, when they visit Georgia State for a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
