Chances Slip Away from Men's Soccer Against Hofstra on Rainy Night, 1-0

BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA – On a rain-soaked evening at Vidas Field, the Drexel men's soccer team saw several early chances slip away, and the visiting Hofstra Pride took advantage of a mistake early in the second half to net the game's only score as they grabbed a big conference matchup, 1-0.
The Dragons had several chances early, controlling play from the outset and rarely letting the ball cross midfield as they peppered shots in towards Hofstra goalkeeper Roberto Pellegrini. They could not dent the scoreboard, however, and play evened out as the weather worsened throughout the first half. Still, the Dragons finished the first period with a 9-4 advantage in total shots, and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
The urgency was not the same to begin the second half. The Dragons were beaten to several loose balls and didn't put a serious threat on Pellegrini as the half got underway, while Hofstra was the team testing the keeper. Pentti Pussinen came up with one nice save, diving to his right, but could not stop the rocket shot off the foot of Chris Griebsch in the 61st minute after the Dragons misplayed a goal kick as the Pride took a 1-0 lead.
Playing in what was, for much of the game, a steady driving rain, Drexel had trouble putting together any sustained offensive attacks after falling behind by a goal. Passes skidded by forwards or players lost their footing, and the Dragons could not push the tempo and get the equalizer.
Drexel will return to Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon when they host VCU in another important contest for the Dragons' hopes of getting back in the conference tournament picture. Kick off for that game is set for 4:00 p.m.
