Drexel Softball Closes Out Hampton Inn Tournament With Shutout Loss to Virginia

Buies Creek, N.C. - Melanie Mitchell continued the dominance of the Dragons (0-4) that started in the fifth inning of Saturday morning's Cavaliers (3-1) victory by throwing a complete-game shutout in the nightcap and ending Drexel's run at the Campbell Hampton Inn Tournament with a 6-0 loss. Hillary Allen was the Dragons' stand-out performer of the week, going 7-for-11 from the plate with a home run and two RBIs to earn herself a place on the All-Tournament Team.
Mitchell, who threw three hittless innings in relief against Drexel in the final game of pool play on Saturday morning, completed the day with a three-hit shutout. Mitchell walked one and fanned eight batters in the victory.
Rookie hurler Shelby Taylor allowed four earned through three and a third on six hits and a walk. She also struck out three batters. Hillary Allen continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate in the designated player role.
Virginia broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-RBI double by Alex Skinkis. Kristen Hawkins followed with another run-scoring double and Giannia Cippolini punched and RBI single to center that chased Taylor from the game. Shyann Beach relieved the freshman and promptly gave up an RBI single to Taylor Williams before retiring the final two outs of the inning.
Marcy Bowdren drove in another run for Virginia with a single in the sixth inning to close out scoring in the game.
The Dragons are back in action on Feb. 25 when they travel to play in the College of Charleston Tournament.
