Philadelphia – Drexel celebrates Senior Night Sunday, Feb. 20 at 5:00 p.m. as it sends off five seniors after four years of dedication to the Drexel wrestling program. Robert Brooks, 174 pounds, Shawn Fausey, 184 pounds, T.J. Laky, 149 pounds, John McDermott, 157 pounds, and captain Justin Wieller, 174 pounds, will participate in their last dual as Drexel Dragons. After 35 years of pacing the side-mat, head coach Jack Childs will also wave good bye as his storied career at the helm of the Drexel wrestling program comes to a close; Childs announced earlier this season that 2010-11 will be his last.
Coach Childs is currently in his 35th season as head coach of Drexel wrestling. To date, Childs has posted an impressive record of 421-269-9 at Drexel, a .602 win percentage. He is the active Division I leader in coaching victories with 421 and has amassed 512 wins at all levels of NCAA competition during his time at Stevens Tech and Drexel spanning 44 years. Drexel's match on Sunday, Feb. 20 against No. 13 Rutgers marks the 700th and last time Childs will step to the side-mat for the Dragons.
On April 22, 2006, Childs was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. His contributions to the sport were also recognized on March. 1, 2003 when he was inducted into the Southeastern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Northeastern Region Pennsylvania Hall of Fame, the East Stroudsburg Athletic Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Athens (Pa.) Area High School Hall of Fame.
The key match-ups in Sunday's dual include five out of 10 bouts at 149, 157, 165, 174 pounds and heavy weight. Drexel's true freshman Austin Sommer from Northampton, Pa., will face No. 4 Mario Mason at 149 pounds followed by Pine Grove, Pa. native Charles Aungst's tough test against No. 15 Daryl Cocozzo at 157 pounds. Drexel then gears up for the highlight bout of the night when Joe Booth, from Bayville, N.Y. and No. 20 on Intermat, faces No. 6 Scott Winston of the Scarlet Nights.
Captain Justin Wieller of Bath, Pa. closes out his career as a Dragon when he steps toe-to-toe with No. 20 Alex Caruso at 174 pounds for one of the crucial match-ups of the night. Finally, at heavy weight, Drexel sophomore Jack Callender of Ivyland, Pa. meets No. 3 D.J. Russo in the center circle for the evening's toughest challenge yet.
Drexel, 7-15 overall and 1-5 in conference action, has squared off with tough tests this year against numerous nationally ranked opponents including No. 8 American, No. 10 Lehigh, No. 21 Pittsburgh and now No. 13 Rutgers. The Dragons will prepare for the CAA Championships held at Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. Friday, March 4-5 followed by the NCAA National Tournament in Philadelphia's very own Wells Fargo Center Thursday, March 17-19.
Seniors will be honored in a ceremony prior to the 5:00 p.m. match while Coach Childs will be recognized following the conclusion of the final bout.
