Boston - In the final road stretch of the regular season, Drexel looks for its second conference win away from the DAC as the Dragons visit Northeastern tonight. Drexel (15-11, 7-8) is coming off a 73-67 loss to Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, which was just the second loss for the Dragons at home this season. Kamile Nacickaite lit up the nets for 30 points to match her career high. The junior is now just five points away from the 1,000-point mark for her career. The Huskies (8-13, 3-12 CAA) are mired in a seven-game losing streak and coming off a 48-33 loss at UNC Wilmington.
Drexel squandered a sensational first-half effort that saw the team generate 14 VCU turnovers and lead by as much as 14 points on Sunday. The Dragons were up eight at the break thanks to a 20-point first half from Nacickaite. Drexel would hold a lead as substantial as 10 points through the first 12 minutes of the second half, but a 22-2 run by VCU allowed the Rams to jump ahead by that same margin and hold on for the victory. Courtney Hurt scored 29 points, the most allowed by the Drexel defense to an opposing player all season, and Andrea Barbour put in 22.
The Huskies scored just 33 points in their last game, a loss at UNC Wilmington, which was their lowest point total of the season. Northeastern shot 30 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 28 times. Rutgers transfer Christine Huber turned in a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double and also swatted away four shots for the Huskies.
Huber had a strong game against the Dragons in the teams' first meeting, a 70-63 Drexel win in Philadelphia on Feb. 13, putting in 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Kamile Nacickaite's career-high 30 points led the way for the Dragons. Drexel led by as much as 16 points in the contest before the Huber and the Huskies rallied to take a one-point lead with three and a half minutes to go. Nacickaite drained a three-pointer with 1:22 to play, breaking a 63 all tie and giving the Dagons a lead they would not relinquish.
Drexel's victory in the last game knotted the all-time series between the Dragons and the Huskies a 17 wins apiece. Drexel has won five straight against Northeastern and 12-of-14 since 2002. Northeastern's last win over Drexel was in Boston on Jan. 31, 2008. The Dragons have won just five times in 16 games against the Huskies in Boston.
The Dragons are currently tied for sixth place in the league with Hofstra at 7-8 and behind the 8-7 Delaware Blue Hens. With three games left in the season, the highest Drexel could finish is in fifth place.
Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Solomon Court. Pat Delsi will be broadcasting the game live on Drexel Game Central.
