Box Score
Charleston, S.C. - Drexel saw a 2-1 lead in the first inning slip away when a five run second inning, bolstered by three fielding errors, allowed the Flames to pull away for a 9-2 victory. Hillary Allen continued her strong performance at the plate thus far this season, going 1-for-3 and driving in both of the Dragons' runs.
The Dragons were plagued by fielding miscues in the game while vying for their third straight win at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. Starter Shyann Beach allowed six runs in one and a third innings, but none of them were earned. Rookie Shelby Taylor threw five and two-thirds innings in relief and was touched up for three unearned runs despite scattering five hits and fanning four batters.
Allen put the Dragons ahead 2-1 after the Flames stole an unearned run with some aggressive baserunning combined with a wild pitch and a fielding error by Devon Metcalf. Rachel Campbell led off the bottom of the first with a single and Laura Stagliano reached on an error by Liberty's centerfielder. After a sacrifice by Jenn Reading and a pop out by clean-up hitter Paige Collings, Allen stroked a single to center that brought home both runners.
Liberty starter Katrina Johnson settled down after the first inning and would face just two over the minimum over the next five innings before giving way to Alyssa DiMartino in the seventh.
The Dragons saw five Flames cross the plate in the second inning on five hits and a pair of errors on the left side of the team's infield. Beach could only record one out in the inning before being relieved by Taylor, who finished the frame and the game for the Drexel.
Drexel wraps up play at the Cougar Classic this evening at 8:00 p.m. against a formidable Iowa State team.
