Upper Marlboro, Md. - Drexel embarks on its 2011 CAA Tournament journey tonight against a team the Dragons have met in the postseason more than any other opponent: the Towson Tigers. Drexel (18-11, 10-8) closed out the regular season on a three-game winning streak, including a 65-51 win over Old Dominion in the season finale to earn the No. 6 seed in the tournament. The Tigers (9-20, 3-13) are the No. 11 seed and enter the tournament with a three-game losing streak. Drexel defeated Towson in both regular season meetings, including their most recent contest 58-47 in Maryland on Feb. 27. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
The Dragons have been playing some of their best basketball of the conference season in the last two weeks. Wins over Northeastern, Towson and Old Dominion have given the Dragons their longest winning streak since the start of the season and momentum heading into the tournament.
Kamile Nacickaite and Hollie Mershon helped Drexel blow past Old Dominion on Senior Night at the DAC on March 2. Nacickaite compiled a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double while Mershon poured in a career-high 23 points. Signifcant contributions from the Dragons' bench including a career-high eight points from Ayana Lee and 25 quality minutes of play from Fiona Flanagan helped the team overcome a number of injuries to pull out the victory.
Drexel and Towson are meeting in a conference tournament for the ninth time. The two programs have faced each other as members of the East Coast Conference, the America East Conference and three times as members of the CAA. Drexel is 6-2 all-time against the Tigers in the post season and the Dragons have won two of their three prior meetings with Towson in the CAA Tournament. Most recently, Drexel defeated Towson in the quarterfinals of the 2009 tournament to begin their CAA Championship run.
