Box Score
Philadelphia - Sophomore Hollie Mershon scored a career-high 23 points to lead Drexel (18-11, 10-8) in a 65-51 victory over Old Dominion (20-9, 14-4) in the teams' season finale. Kamile Nacickaite compiled a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Dragons who will be the No. 6 seed in the CAA Tournament which will be held in Upper Marlboro, Md. at the Showplace Arena. The Dragons will face the No. 11 seed Towson, a team which Drexel swept in two regular-season meetings. The contest was the final home game for Drexel senior Jasmina Rosseel, the program's second leading three-point shooter. Jackie Cook led the Lady Monarchs with 13 points.
While the game was nip-and-tuck for the majority of the first half with the teams exchanging the lead three times, Drexel ultimately decided their final home game of the year with a voracious 17-0 run early in the second half. Mershon capped the momentum-stealing drive with a mid-range jumper that gave Drexel its largest lead of the game, 49-33, with 11:35 to play.
From that point, Drexel entrenched itself and held on for the Old Dominion push in the last 9:25 of the game. That charge came in the form of a parade to the free throw line, that saw the Lady Monarchs visit the stripe six times in less than two and a half minutes.
Old Dominion was able to chisel the lead down to 10 points as late as the 4:44 mark in the game. But Mershon took over for the Dragons from that point on. She hit a driving layup and then draining a three-pointer off a kick out from Nacickaite in the post to put the Dragons back on top by a comfortable 15-point margin with 2:18 to play.
Mershon looked uncontainable at times against one of the better on-ball defensive teams in the league. Her drives set up a number of scoring opportunities for her teammates as well, as she led the team with four assists to go along with her career scoring night.
Nacickaite led a Drexel front line that denied the Lady Monarchs offensive rebounds time and time again. Her 12 boards were a season high. The Dragons out-worked Old Dominion 34-27 on the boards and pulled down 26 defensive boards, led by Nacickaite's 10.
Drexel shot 49 percent from the floor and knocked down 8-of-20 three-pointers, led by a 4-for-5 effort from Nacickaite from long range. Old Dominion was held to 38.5 percent shooting in the game and made only 3-of-12 from distance.
Old Dominion jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the game thanks to a number of Drexel miscues against the Lady Monarchs' trapping defense at mid court. The first hint of turning the tied came when Ayana Lee drove in the post, threw a head fake and knocked down a layup with her defender flying over her back to foul her. The three-point play settled the Dragons. When senior Jasmina Rosseel knocked down a three-pointer two minutes later, Drexel took its first lead of the game.
After yielding its lead to Old Dominion twice in the half, Drexel settled in to take a five-point led into the locker room thanks to a late layup by Nacickaite. The Dragons 32-27 halftime lead was quickly erased with a 5-0 Old Dominion spurt to open the second half capped by a layup from Tia Lewis that put her team on top 33-32.
A timeout by Head Coach Denise Dillon reset her team on both ends of the court. Mershon hit a driving layup at the 16:52 mark to give the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish. And defensively, Drexel held Old Dominion without a point for nearly six and a half minutes of play.
The victory was Drexel's 12th on its home court this year, which matches the team's all-time record for home wins - a mark set by the 2007-08 team. The Dragons complete their fourth straight season with a winning record in CAA play and head into the conference tournament to face a Towson team that they have defeated twice this season.
