BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - Locked in a defensive struggle for most of the night, the Drexel men's soccer team dodged one bullet late in the second half but could not dodge a second as their home opener was spoiled by the Lafayette Leopards, 1-0. Drexel outshot the Leopards 10-7, but could not put one of those shots home as they were held scoreless for a third time in four contests to start the season.
With the game scoreless in the 76th minute, Lafayette worked the ball into the box, where Sean Peckham lured goalkeeper Pentti Pussinen out. He seemed to have an open look at the net, but defender Tal Bublil was right there to make a team save at the goal line, keeping the scoreboard clean.
Five minutes later, however, the Dragons would not be so fortunate. Eight yards out, Alec Golini tapped a cross to Ryan Dodds, who narrowly avoided an offsides call and redirected the ball beyond the reach of Pussinen.
Until those late stages of the game, it was Drexel that appeared to be getting the best opportunities. In the first half, Manuel Cazares poked a beautiful feed to Mark Donohue, but the sophomore forward chipped it just over the crossbar. Brandon Zeller would later add two shots on goal, with the Dragons putting four shots on Lafayette goalkeeper Graham Heydt all told compared to just two shots on goal for the Leopards.
Drexel will be back in action on Saturday when they visit NJIT at 7:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through the Highlanders' website by clicking here.
