NEWARK, N.J. – Pentti Pussinen matched a career high with nine saves and shut out host NJIT on Saturday night, but the Drexel offense could not come up with a tally of its own as the Dragons and Highlanders fought to a scoreless draw.
The Dragons were not without their chances, peppering 12 shots in the second half and three more in overtime, but NJIT goalkeeper Adriano Deabreu stopped all six shots that tested him, matching Pussinen's shutout effort.
Ken Tribbett had four shots for the Dragons, while Mark Donohue and Manuel Cazares had three each.
Drexel had just three shots in the first half, but put two on goal as Cazares and Donohue each forced Deabreu to make saves within five minutes of each other midway through the period. Three of the Dragons' 12 shots in the second half put Deabreu to work, but none could elude his grasp.
Meanwhile, Pussinen was rock solid in net for the Dragons. NJIT sprayed four shots in each half of regulation, with the sophomore goalkeeper deftly keeping the Highlanders off the board.
After a relatively uneventful first overtime period, the two squads put up a combined eight shots in the game's final 10 minutes. Only one each went on goal, with both keepers making the save to keep the scoreboard clean.
Drexel will return to action on Wednesday night, when they host Bucknell at Vidas Field at 7:00 p.m.
