No.15 Duke Defeats No.18 Drexel Field Hockey, 2-0, on Sunday

Newark, Del. - The 18th-ranked Drexel field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to the No.15 Duke Blue Devils on Sunday in a game held on the campus of the University of Delaware. Both teams remained scoreless as the first half came to an end, but Duke's two goal spurt in the second half was enough to surpass the Dragons. The loss dropped Drexel to 3-1 on the season, while Duke improved to 3-1.
In the first half, the Blue Devils outshot the Dragons, 13-1, and recorded the game's only five penalty corner attempts. Drexel's Katie Francis made three saves and helped the Dragons hold off Duke, 0-0, at half.
The Dragons fired three shots and registered two corners in the opening minutes of the second half, but were unable to put the ball past Duke's Samantha Nelson. At 12:40, Drexel was handed its third yellow card of the game and continued to play minus defender Emily Beamesderfer. Duke's Devon Gagliardi took advantage of the opportunity and gave the Blue Devils the first lead of the game,1-0.
Less than two minutes later, Duke's Emmie Le Marchand scored from teammate Tara Jennings' pass. Duke held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Katie Francis made her first collegiate start for Drexel. Francis made a career high of four saves and now has seven stops on the season.
The Dragons will return to action on Friday, September 9, against Sacred Heart.
