New Haven, Conn. – The Drexel women's field hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0, under the lights at Johnson Field on the campus of Yale University. The Dragons outshout Sacred Heart, 22-5, and had nine penalty corners to the Pioneers' three. The win moved Drexel 4-1 on the season, while Sacred Heart dropped 1-4.
Sophomore Elise DiDonato set a career high with two assists and also scored only goal in the second half. DiDonato leads the team with four assists.
Drexel's Ashley Santee broke the scoreless tie with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Santee received a pass from Elise DiDonato from inside the circle and put the ball behind Sacred Heart's Kim Stow. With 4:32 remaining in the half, freshman Margaux Lourtie's one-touch shot put the Dragons ahead by two, 2-0.
The Dragons continued to put pressure on the Pioneers and tallied a quick goal in the opening minutes of the second half. DiDonato's breakaway goal put the Dragons ahead by three, 3-0. Drexel held onto the lead until time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Brooke Underwood made two saves and earned the shutout. Underwood split time in the cage with Kim Chiarelli who saw her first minutes for Drexel. Sacred Heart's Kim Stow made 11 stops.
The Drexel field hockey team will return to action on Sunday, September 11 against No. 4 Connecticut.
