Storrs, Conn. – No. 4 Connecticut edged Drexel 2-0 in a tightly contested women's field hockey game at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. Connecticut held a slim advantage in shots, 15-12, while the Dragons earned eight penalty corners to the Huskies' four. Drexel is 4-2 on the season, while Connecticut improved its perfect 5-0 record.
Senior Sofia Sanguinetti and junior Amanda Fleischut both registered four shots against Connecticut.
Drexel earned a quick corner in the opening minute of the contest, but Connecticut's goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield blocked a shot from sophomore midfielder Lindsay McArdle. Connecticut's Cara Silverman gained momentum and scored her first goal of the season just seconds later. Connecticut had a one-goal lead, 1-0, at half.
At 11:01 into the final half, Connecticut's Marie Bolles gave the Huskies a two-goal lead, 2-0. Drexel outshot Connecticut 9-6 in the second half, but were unable to break the shutout.
Senior goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli posted four saves for a new career high in 51:04 minutes of play, while teammate Brooke Underwood made one stop. Connecticut's Sarah Mansfield had four saves.
The Dragons will return to Buckley Field on Friday, September 16 in a match-up against Lafayette.
