Drexel Tops Lafayette, 1-0, on Friday Night

Philadelphia – Freshman Christina Conrad's second half goal led the Dragons past Lafayette, 1-0, on Friday night at Buckley Field. Drexel outshot the Leopards 13-10 and had three corners to Lafayette's eight. The victory improved Drexel to 5-2 overall, while the Leopards dropped to 2-4 on the season.
Lafayette tested the Dragons defense in the opening minutes of the first half. The Leopards picked up five consecutive penalty corners at the 12-minute mark, but were unable to get the ball past Drexel's goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli. Lafayette maintained possession for the majority of the opening half and outshot the Dragons 6-1. The game remained scoreless, 0-0, at half.
Senior Ashley Santee opened up the second half with a quick shot, but was blocked by the sticks of the Leopard's defense. At 13:29 into the final half, freshman standout Christina Conrad chipped shot the ball past Lafayette's Jessica Deuysch giving Drexel the first lead of the game, 1-0. The Dragons outshot the Leopards 12-4 in the final half, and held onto the one-goal lead until time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli recorded her first career start and shutout for Drexel. Chiarelli tied her career saves with four and now has eight on the season.
The Drexel field hockey team returns to Buckley Field on Sunday, September 18 as the Dragons host city-rival Temple at noon.
