The Drexel men's soccer team made a valiant effort but came up short in its match against sixth-ranked Creighton University on Sunday night, 3-0. The Dragons, playing for the first time at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, held the powerful Creighton offense in check for most of the match before the Bluejays scored two insurance goals late while the Dragons were playing a man down. The teams played in front of a crowd of 5,425.
The Bluejays got on the board in the final minutes of the first half. Andrew Ribeiro was credited with a goal after his shot deflected off a Drexel defender past Dragons' keeper Pentti Pussinen with just in the 43rd minute. Dion Acoff picked up the assist on the goal, which turned out to be the only scoring of the half as Creighton went to intermission ahead by a goal. The defenses controlled the half as each team managed just one shot on the goal in the first 45 minutes.
Pussinen kept the Dragons in the game early in the second half, making three saves in the first 10 minutes, including two off the foot of Ethan Finlay, an All-American last year and a national player of the year candidate. The Dragons chances to tie were dealt a major blow as they were forced to play a man down for the final 13 minutes after Philip Hagerty received a red card. The Bluejays took less than three minutes to capitalize as Eric Miller's cross found Greg Jordan, whose diving header gave Creighton a two-goal lead with just under 10 minutes to play. Bruno Castro ended the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute to make the final deficit three goals.
Pussinen finished with four saves for the Dragons. Brian Holt posted another shutout for Creighton, making two saves. Creighton outshot the Dragons, 15-2.
Drexel concludes its three match road trip to start the season on Saturday against Rutgers University. The
match begins at 7 p.m. The Dragons make their home debut on Sept. 14 against Lafayette.
