Hampton, Va. – Drexel went 1-2 this afternoon at the Virginia Duals. No. 23 Edinboro defeated the Dragons 6-30 while CAA rival Rider barely edged Drexel in an 18-19 back-and-forth fight that came down to the last match. In their final dual, the Dragons outlasted Bucknell . Junior Joe Booth and senior Kyle Frey both went 3-0 in their matches while Brandon Palik and Frank Cimato went 2-1. Three other Dragons picked up wins as Kevin Matyas, Paul Wampler and Austin Sommer all recorded victories for Drexel. Sommer won in pinning fashion with a fall over Rider's Patrick Sabatini.
Drexel dropped its first match-up to Edinboro as only two Dragons managed wins. No. 18 Joe Booth, 165, and Kyle Frey, heavy weight, both found the win column against a powerful Edinboro squad. The Fighting Scots took eight of 10 matches with three bonus point wins for the final victory.
In their next match-up, the Dragons took on Rider in a hard fought battle for a chance to wrestle Saturday. The Broncs took the first two matches before Cimato stepped on the mat to pull a 6-2 decision over Jimmy Kirchner at 141 pounds to put the Dragons on the board. Rider was able to take one back at 149 pounds before Drexel picked up the next two. Sommer, 157 pounds, pinned Sabatini and pulled the Dragons to within one point, 9-10. Then, with Booth's 7-1 decision over James Brundage, Drexel took a two point advantage over Rider with four matches to go. Booth, ranked 18 in the country at 165 pounds, now holds a 15-3 record, 5-0 in duals.
Rider strung together back-to-back bonus point wins as No. 13 Jim Resnick earned the tech fall over Alex Rinaldi at 174 before Clint Morrison majored Nick Becattini at 184. Still alive, the Dragons didn't roll over as No. 20 Palik picked up his second win of the day with a 4-1 decision over Donald McNeil at 197 pounds. Drexel, down just four points, was still in the match but despite almost rolling Evan Craig of Rider on his back twice, Frey was only able to pick up three team points in his 6-1 decision.
In their third match of the day, the Dragons took on Bucknell and kept fighting earning their only team win of the tournament. Early in the match, Wampler picked up his first career win as a Dragon with a 5-4 decision over the Bison's Bob Hauser at 133 pounds. The rookie is now 1-3 on the year. Down 10-17 with three matches to go, Drexel pulled off the come-from-behind win by sweeping the final three bouts. Matyas made his first appearance for the Dragons and picked up his first win on the season in what proved to be the crucial match up of the dual with a comfortable 6-0 decision over Bucknell's Jamie Westwood at 184 pounds. Palik followed with an 8-4 win while Frey dominated in a 10-1 major over Tyler Lyster at heavy weight.
Booth and Frey outscored their opponents 18-4 and 21-6 respectively. Drexel will be back to the mat in Fairfax, Va. on Saturday, January 21 for the CAA Duals.
