Women's Soccer Falls in a Shootout in CAA Semifinals

Williamsburg, Va. – The Drexel women's soccer team had its remarkable season come to a disappointing end as UNCW defeated the Dragons (13-3-3) in a shootout in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals.
The Seahawks' (12-6-3) Ali Nagle scored on the first penalty kick. Drexel countered with Courtney Wylie. In what seemed like a theme for the night, Wylie's shot hit the crossbar. Lindsay Henry was next for UNCW and she made it 2-0 in the shootout. Jourdan Halasz stepped up for Drexel, but her shot hit the post. The teams each scored on their third shot, as UNCW's Mary Chestnut-Smith and Drexel's Sam Greenfield tallied. The Seahawks clinched and made it 4-1 when All-CAA performer Stephanie Rose beat Eve Badana and moved UNCW into the CAA title game on Sunday against either Hofstra or William & Mary.
The overtime periods were full of action as each team had opportunities. UNCW thought it had the game winner with 3:30 left in the second overtime when Katrina Guillou appeared to score, but the Seahawks were offside. In the final minute of the second overtime Drexel had two golden opportunities, but each time Caitlin Hunter came up with saves to thwart what could have been the game winner. Megan Hammaker was denied with a minute to play and then Lauren Stollar broke in on the left side but Hunter made a diving shot as Stollar tried to go to the short side. In the first overtime, Drexel had the best scoring chances. With just under four minutes to play, Sam Greenfield hit the crossbar from 22 yards out.
After a scoreless first half, Drexel opened the second half with a major scoring opportunity. Drexel's midfield took possession and fed a ball over the top to Jess Sarkisian. The junior broke in and chipped a ball over aitlin Hunter. The shot looked good, but hit the crossbar and bounced out. The Dragons were unable to gather the rebound and UNCW cleared.
The game stayed scoreless until the 81st minute. Stephanie Rose broke in on the right side and lofted a cross to the left side of the field. Maddie McCormack corralled the ball, made a move and fired a shot into the lower left corner to put UNCW ahead, 1-0.
The Dragons evened the game at 1-1 after a flurry in front of the Seahawks' goal. Drexel had the ball in the box but could not get a good shot with UNCW's defense packed in tight. However, after a loose ball bounced off a UNCW defender, Melissa Chapman one-timed a shot into the left side of the net to tie the match up with just 3:23 left on the clock. It was the fourth goal of the year for the First Team All-CAA pick.
Drexel outshot the Seahawks, 22-10, in the match. In the second half and overtime, the margin was 17-7 as the Dragons controlled the majority of play after a somewhat slow start in the first half. Eve Badana, the CAA's Defensive Player of the Year, made five saves for the Dragons. She ended the year with the best single-season goals against average in Drexel history. Hunter had eight saves for the Seahawks.
