ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Drexel women's tennis team visited Navy to conclude its weekend, falling to the Midshipmen, 4-3. Drexel won the doubles point, but Navy grabbed four of the six singles matches to come back and get the win on its home courts.
The match opened well for the Dragons, with two of the three Drexel doubles teams winning their matches, earning the team doubles point. Alex Bell and Nicole Pivonka handled business at No. 3, winning 8-3. After Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa dropped a tough 8-6 decision at No. 1, Elise Leizerovich and Marcela Rosales maintained their composure and gutted out an 8-6 win of their own at No. 2.
Singles play, however, went to the Midshipmen. Mafa had a strong shjowing at No. 2 singles, winning the first set by a close 6-4 count before controlling the second set, 6-2. Bell also did well. Despite falling down early and dropping the first set, 6-4, Bell regained her focus and won the next two sets, 6-4, 6-1, to put away her opponent at No. 5 singles.
Rosales also took her match to three sets at No. 3, but could not finish things off to earn what would have been the match-winning point. She won the first set, 6-0, but then fell 6-4 in the second before ceding a 6-0 decision in the third and final set. Stosic played well at No. 1, but fell 6-4, 6-3.
Drexel will return to the courts on March 3, when they host Wagner.
