BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team opened its home schedule on Wednesday afternoon, but there were no fireworks for the Dragons as they fell to Georgetown, 3-0. Shelby Taylor took the loss despite four strong innings of four-hit softball, but the Dragons managed just four hits for the afternoon as they fell to 6-10 on the season.
Georgetown got on the board in the third inning when Megan Hyson stroked a one-out double to the wall in left-center field. It was the Hoyas' first hit of the afternoon. She moved up a bag on a grounder to second base, and scored on one of Taylor's rare mistakes on the afternoon, a wild pitch that sailed over catcher Paige Collings' head and back to the backstop.
The Hoyas added unearned runs in the fourth and seventh innings, although Taylor and her successor Hillary Allen did outstanding jobs working out of trouble, stranding runners on second and third in both instances. The reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week struck out four and walked just one over four innings, while Allen gave up an unearned run on just one hit in three innings of work, allowing only one batted ball - a fly ball to center field - to leave the infield.
Meanwhile, Drexel had a difficult time solving the Hoyas' starting pitcher, Hyson. She improved to 4-3 on the season with five strikeouts and two walks while going the distance. Caprice DeMirjian singled twice, beating out an infield hit and blooping one into left field, but could not move past first base either time. The only time the Dragons got a baserunner into scoring position was the sixth, when Paige Collings ripped a solid two-out single back up the middle, perhaps the hardest hit ball of the afternoon for Drexel. Elena Fravel was brought in as a pinch runner, moving to second when Jenn Reading walked. Allen could not get the run home, however, striking out to end the inning.
Drexel will return to the diamond this weekend, taking part in its final preseason tournament of the year. The Dragons will visit Campbell in North Carolina for the Hampton Inn Camel Stampede Tournament, taking on NC Central and the hosts, Campbell, twice each over Friday and Saturday.
