PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's tennis team defeated Hofstra 5-2 on Saturday, winning a second-consecutive match at the Drexel Armory to get a crucial CAA victory.
The Dragons swept the doubles points, then got individual victories from Badr Ouabdelmoumen, Bryan Nguyen, Dan Koehler and Paul Stauskas to earn the win.
Drexel swept the three doubles matches to get the day started with the doubles point. After going down 4-1 against a previously-undefeated team, the No. 1 doubles duo of Bryan Nguyen and Skyler Davis rallied, regaining their focus and playing smart tennis to win seven straight games for an 8-4 victory. Jeganathan Srinivasan and Dan Hansen served well and broke serve when they needed to in order to grab an 8-7 victory at No. 2. Dan Koehler and Badr Ouabdelmoumen played an aggressive match, winning 8-6.
The top singles player, Ouabdelmoumen, fell down 3-0 in the first set and 2-1 in the second set, but was able to regain his game and win, 6-4, 7-5. Nguyen also got down early in his match at No. 3, going down 6-5 before rebounding for a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win. The pair displayed a mental toughness earned over a full season of close singles matches to pull their respective matches out in the end.
Playing at No. 5, Koehler displayed a unique serve and volley style that helped him set up his opponent and put a lot of pressure on his counterpart, winning 6-3, 4-6 (2). Stauskas also got behind early, keeping his composure to earn a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6.
The Dragons will close out their home schedules on March 31, two weeks from Saturday, when they host St. Peter's at the Armory in a match beginning at 10:00 a.m.
