BOX SCORE
AUBURN, Ala. - The Drexel softball team got off to an exciting start at the War Eagle Classic, building a big lead late and holding on for a 6-5 victory over Presbyterian. Hillary Allen started and went six innings to get the win for the Dragons. Allen also provided what would be the game-winning run with her solo home run in the top of the seventh inning that made it 6-2 at the time.
Paige Collings and Jenn Reading had two hits and scored two runs apiece. Sylvia Llamas drove in two for the Dragons, who improved to 4-8 on the young season.
Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Dragons broke out for three runs to take a lead it would not relinquish. After Devon Metcalf reached on an error to open the frame, Collings smoked a double to the wall in left field, putting runners on second and third with no one out.
From there, the Dragons would not need another hit to score three runs. The bases were soon loaded when Reading drew a walk. The first run scored on an RBI walk drawn by Maddison Timoteo. Collings would then come around to score when Caprice DeMirjian was hit by a pitch. Llamas then walked to bring home Reading.
The Dragons scored twice more in the fifth on RBI singles from pinch hitter Amanda Bachmann and Llamas.
Drexel held Presbyterian to two runs through the first six innings, as Hillary Allen scattered three hits and struck out five. In the top of the seventh, Allen helped her own cause with an insurance run that would prove crucial, launching a home run to center field with one out and no one on.
Coming back out to the circle in the bottom of the seventh, Allen allowed the first five Presbyterian hitters to reach base, as they crawled back within a run. The bases were loaded with one out when Shelby Taylor induced a fielder's choice ground ball to shortstop that gunned down the runner trying to score, and got another fielder's choice grounder to third to preserve the victory.
Drexel will play twice at Auburn on Saturday, opening with the host Tigers at 10:00 a.m. and playing Evansville at 3:00 p.m.
