BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - In a steady, cold rain, the Drexel softball team made short work of UNCW in the rubber game of the teams' three-game weekend series, as the Dragons scored three in the first, six in the second and three more in the third to win, 12-2. Maddison Timoteo hit a grand slam and Paige Collings added a three-run shot as Hillary Allen won her tenth game of the season.
After Allen set the Seahawks down in order in the top of the first, Drexel took a lead it would never relinqush in the bottom half. Devon Metcalf drew a one-out walk, then stole second. After Paige Collings walked, Jenn Reading struck out and it looked like the Seahawks would be able to escape unscathed when Maddison Timoteo hit a pop up on the infield. Kristen Jernigan charged in from third base for UNCW, but as she tried to secure the catch, the ball popped in and out of her glove. Metcalf scored, and Collings moved around to third. Amanda Bachmann followed with a bloop single behind the bag at first base to plate Collings, and Hillary Allen laced a liner through the right side of the infield that scored Timoteo.
In the second, Comfort Ahonkhai led off with a drive to right that went all the way to the wall for a triple. After Hanna Parrish walked and stole second, Metcalf singled through the left side to bring home Ahonkhai. Collings drew a walk to load the bases, and Reading followed with a walk to force home Parrish.
With the bases loaded and still no one out, Timoteo stepped up and sent a blast to the deepest part of the ballpark. Through the raindrops, it went up and out for a grand slam, extending the lead to 9-0.
Up 9-0 in the third, Parrish once again led off, singling through the right side. Metcalf followed with a single, and after Parrish moved to third on a wild pitch, Collings connected and sent a drive to left for a three-run home run, her seventh of the year and RBIs 35, 36 and 37.
From there, it became a matter of beating the weather, as the rain intensified as the game went on. Allen did not allow a hit through the first three. The Seahawks got single runs in the fourth and fifth, but could not mount a rally to get back in the game. With Drexel leading by 10 after 4.5 innings, the game was called due to the eight-run rule.
The Dragons will now have five days off, as they do not play a midweek game before welcoming George Mason in for the final home series of the year next weekend. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 11:00 a.m., as does Sunday's single game.
