Men's Tennis Solidifies 4-3 Win at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA - Playing without its senior leader in regular No. 3 singles player Bryan Nguyen, the Drexel men's tennis team rallied and earned a dramatic win at crosstown rival Saint Joseph's, 4-3. Paul Stauskas in particular stepped up in the absence of Nguyen, winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a tense, back-and-forth match at No. 6 to clinch the overall match for the Dragons.
Drexel started the day off right, winning the all-important doubles point. Skyler Davis and Badr Ouabdelmoumen rolled to an 8-3 victory at No. 1, and after Saint Joseph's claimed the No. 3 match, Drexel wrapped up the point with a 9-8 (7-3) triumph as Jegenathan Srinivasan and Dan Hansen edged the No. 2 Hawks team after being down 3-0 early.
Nguyen's absence affected the matchups in doubles, as Drexel coaches Tricia Udicious and Mehdi Rhazali paired Ouabdelmoumen and Davis, players who had paired in doubles to good affect earlier in the year. Both of them big hitters, they won on the strength of their service games.
In singles play, Ouabdelmoumen stepped up at the top of the lineup, where he has played throughout the season, playing a controlled, smart game to roll to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
At No. 3, Skyler Davis demonstrated outstanding footwork, staying low and turning well to improve his timing. He won the first set 6-1, then gutted his way through a close second set, 7-6 (7-5).
Saint Joseph's rallied to win three of the first five singles matches off the courts, and needed just one more to win the match despite dropping the doubles point to the Dragons. The last match on the court was the No. 6 singles battle, where Paul Stauskas stepped into the lineup for Drexel and showed that he belonged.
Starting the match with a defensive philosophy, Stauskas won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second by a mirror score, 4-6. As he shifted to a more aggressive, attacking mindset, Stauskas mixed up his shot selection to make his opponent run. Still, he could not put him away. With his teammates now off their courts and cheering him on, Stauskas closed out down the stretch in the third set, winning 7-5 to bring home an important victory for the team.
Drexel will return to the courts on Saturday, when the Dragons visit Delaware at 11:00 a.m.
