BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team came up short in its search for a sweep of its three-game series with Towson over the weekend, falling to the Tigers 2-0 in the series finale on Saturday. Hillary Allen pitched seven strong innings for the Dragons, but she was outdone by Towson's Katie Lingmai, who tossed a no-hitter to shut out the Dragons and salvage one of the three games for the Tigers.
Allen struck out nine over seven innings of work, her season high. She finished the weekend with 16 strikeouts in 14.0 innings of work against the Tigers, going 1-1 and allowing just two earned runs.
The memorable day for Towson's Lingmai did not get off to an ideal start. Hanna Parrish led off the bottom of the first for the Dragons with a high drive to deep right field. Brianna Jones settled underneath it as she drifted towards the right-center field gap, but the ball popped in and out of her glove, an error that would ultimately see Parrish end up on third base. Despite having a runner on third with no one out to open the game, Drexel could not push the run across. It would prove to be the Dragons' best scoring opportunity of the day.
Towson scored twice in the fourth inning as Hailey Stueckler led off with a single and stole second before Macie McGeehan was hit by a pitch. Both would ultimately come around to score on an RBI single by Jillian Donnelly and a run-scoring groundout from Kelli Lyons.
With the exception of that fourth inning, Allen made life difficult for the Tigers, as she had on Friday. She scattered nine hits over seven innings, but shut the door when she needed to with those nine strikeouts. Allen struck out the side in the seventh inning, finishing her weekend's work on a strong note after flustering the Towson hitters throughout the series.
Towson did threaten in the sixth inning, but was thwarted by the cannon arm of Drexel center fielder Comfort Ahonkhai. With two outs and runners on first and second, Towson's Andrea Stevenson lined a single up the middle. Donnelly rounded third and tried to score an insurance run for the Tigers, but Ahonkhai fielded the base hit cleanly and came up firing, hitting catcher Paige Collings perfectly and beating Donnelly by several steps. The out ended the inning and kept the deficit at two runs.
Unfortunately, Drexel was not able to muster anything offensively after Parrish's three-base error in the first. Allen drew a walk and Maddison Timoteo was hit by a pitch, but both were ultimately stranded at second base as no other Dragon reached base. Lingmai retired the last nine hitters of the game in order, striking out Allen and Timoteo to finish off the game.
Drexel will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts La Salle at the Drexel Softball Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
