Field Hockey Shuts Out Rider, 3-0, on Sunday

Philadelphia – Sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter earned her second straight shutout as the Drexel Field Hockey team defeated Rider, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field. Drexel outshout the Broncs, 16-8, while Rider earned six penalty corners to the Dragons' two. Drexel improved to 2-0 overall.
With just 7:14 into the first half, junior forward Elise DiDonato carried the ball towards the end line and found teammate Christina Conrad unmarked on the right side of Rider's goalkeeper Joelle Prettyman. Conrad one-touched the ball into the cage giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Drexel tallied eight shots, but the score remained the same as the first half came to an end.
After eight minutes of play in the second half, the Dragons earned a penalty corner, but didn't score off of the initial shot. Lindsay McArdle was able to gain possession, despite the crowd in front of the cage, and pushed the ball past Rider's keeper. Drexel continued to put pressure on the Broncs' defense. At 15:57, freshman forward Mary Lynam recorded her first collegiate goal.
Rider continued to work the ball in the Dragons' defensive end earning three penalty corners in the final eight minutes. Drexel's defensive penalty corner unit didn't allow a shot to break through the circle. The squad held on to the lead until the game clock expired.
Drexel's goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made two saves in the win over Rider. She now has seven saves on the season. The Broncs' goalkeeper Joelle Prettyman stopped seven of the Dragons' shots.
The Drexel field hockey team will take a short road trip on Friday, August 31 to Saint Joseph's. The game is set for 3:00 p.m. at Ellen Ryan Field.
