Field Hockey Defeats Saint Joseph's in Overtime, 2-1

Philadelphia – Drexel's Lindsay McArdle scored a pair of goals for a new career high, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to help the Dragons defeat Saint Joseph's, 2-1. The win marks Drexel Field Hockey's 17th straight win over a Philadelphia-area school. The Dragons outshot Saint Joseph's, 23-12, and held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. The Dragons are now 3-0 overall.
With just two minutes into the opening half, Saint Joseph's worked the ball down into the Dragons' attacking end. Saint Joseph's Jordan Martin took a hard shot on goal, but Jantien Gunter made the stop for Drexel. The Hawks' earned a corner in the following play, but Gunter made a glove save to keep the game scoreless.
At 25:46, junior midfielder Lindsay McArdle fired a shot over the right shoulder of Saint Joseph's Kate Mitchell to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. More than five minutes later, sophomore Christina Conrad one-touched the ball towards the cage, but Mitchell made a jumping glove save to hold the Hawks' to a one goal deficit.
With 13 minutes remaining in the first, Saint Joseph's Martin looked to put points on the board for the Hawks, but Gunter turned away the shot. At 11:55, Saint Joseph's Nicole Gerdes scored from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner. The score was tied, 1-1, at half. The Dragons outshot the Hawks', 12-5, while both teams earned two penalty corners.
After 15 minutes of play in the second half, Gunter slid out blocking Martin's shot off the top of her blockers. The Dragons quickly moved the ball back into the Hawks' defensive end. Senior Amanda Fleischut blasted a shot, but the ball was cleared away by Mitchell.
With 12 minutes left in the second half, Gunter made two consecutive saves. Junior back Kristen Focht followed the rebound and cleared the ball again for the Dragons to preserve the tie. Both teams were unable to score in the final minutes of regulation time.
In the opening minutes of overtime, McArdle carried the ball down the left side of the field and shot the ball past Mitchell to give the Dragons' their third straight win.
Gunter set a new career-high with eight saves. She now has 15 stops on the season. Opposing keeper Mitchell recorded nine saves.
The Dragons will face three teams in California next week. Drexel will play UC Davis on Wednesday, September 5 at 2:00 p.m. (PST) followed by games against California and Stanford over the weekend.
