BOX SCORE
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Matheus Goncalves notched his first two collegiate goals and the Drexel men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season, 2-1 over Air Force in double overtime. Goncalves, who had given the Dragons a 1-0 lead early in the second half, scored just over one minute into the second extra period to send Drexel home from Colorado with a 1-0-1 record on the western trip and a 1-1-1 mark overall.
Goncalves became the sixth different Dragon to score a goal this season, and the first to tally a second goal. Fabio Machado assisted on both of Goncalves' goals, while Michele Pataia also earned an assist on the game-winner. Tim Washam, making his second start of the season, had three saves.
After withstanding a very early push by the host Falcons, Drexel controlled possession for most of the first half. Malcolm LeBourne had a shot deflect off the crossbar, while John Grosh came off the bench and had a good look of his own that went high. Nevertheless, the game went to intermission scoreless, with Air Force actually outshooting the Dragons, 6-2.
Coming out of the break, Drexel kept up the pressure. Just over four minutes into the period, Machado fed Goncalves in the box, who fired away from 12 yards out and beat Air Force keeper Matt Underwood for the game's first goal. Goncalves, who had four shots as a freshman last year, scored on his first shot of 2012.
Abinadi Samoyoa evened the game up in the 77th minute. Washam was able to save a shot by Zane Dydasco, but could not control the rebound as Samoyoa got a foot on it and poked it home.
The game remained knotted at one as regulation came to a close, then through the first overtime. Machado had a shot in the first overtime that was saved by Underwood, but that was the only test for either team in the first extra period. Then in the second overtime, Drexel got control of the ball in its own territory. Machado sent a long pass down the left side to Pataia, who fed Goncalves eight yards out from the goal. Goncalves made it two-for-two on shots this season when his game-winner dented the back of the net.
Drexel now returns home for its next game, when the Dragons will take on Lehigh on Friday night. That game will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
