PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team will open its home schedule on Friday night as the Dragons welcome Lehigh to Vidas Field at 7:00 p.m. Drexel comes in looking to build on the momentum of its road trip to Colorado, where the Dragons went 1-0-1 at Denver and Air Force, scoring five total goals on the trip. The game will air on Dragons TV for fans unable to make it out to the field in person.
The Dragons have displayed a balanced, efficient offensive attack thus far this season, with six different goal scorers accounting for Drexel's seven scores. Sophomore Matheus Goncalves is the only Dragon with multiple goals, scoring on both of his shots at Air Force on Sunday to give Drexel a 2-1 victory, its first of the season. The goals were Goncalves' first two as a collegian. Sophomore Fabio Machado, in his first year with the Dragons, has a goal and four assists through his first three games to lead the team with six total points.
All three of the Dragons' games thus far this season have gone to overtime, as Drexel has shown a resiliancy to come back from deficits in games at La Salle and Denver. Against Air Force, it was the Dragons who held a 1-0 lead in the second half, but after the Falcons knotted things up and sent it to overtime, Drexel responded with the game-winner just over a minute into the second overtime period.
Friday's game opens a seven-game home schedule for Drexel, which includes visits from crosstown rival Penn and national contenders Old Dominion and James Madison. Last year, the Dragons were the only team in the Colonial Athletic Association to go undefeated against those two nationally-ranked squads, finishing their season with a win over No. 12 James Madison and earning a draw at No. 16 Old Dominion.
In Lehigh, Drexel will face a team looking to build upon a close loss to St. Peter's in its last outing. The Mountain Hawks have scored just two goals this season, both in the 3-2 loss to St. Peter's. Both scores came off the foot of Brian Suchoski, who gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead early in the contest. Lehigh opened its season with a 2-0 loss to Hofstra at home on August 25, then fell at Stony Brook in overtime, 1-0.
