Women's Soccer Unbeaten Streak Snapped at UNCW, 2-0
9/28/2012 8:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Drexel women's soccer team's nine-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Friday night in North Carolina as UNCW handed the Dragons a 2-0 loss. Drexel fell to 7-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Seahawks are now 2-1 in the CAA and 7-4-1 on the season.
UNCW's offense started the second half strong, firing five shots in the first 10 minutes of play in the period. The Seahawks broke the scoreless tie in the match's 51st minute. Amanda Holmes sent in a cross to Stephanie Bronson, who chipped it home from 16 yards out. Later in the half, Drexel put some pressure on the UNCW defense. The Dragons had some key contributions from their reserves as Civanni Moss and Jess Sarkisian each had two shots in the second half. However, each had one turned aside by UNCW keeper Caitlin Hunter. Sarkisian's best chance came off a header with nine minutes to play. The Seahawks held on and answered with an insurance goal in the 85th minute. Maddie McCormick hit the post, picked up her own rebound and scored the second goal of the match. It was Drexel's first loss since August 17.
UNCW outshot Drexel, 15-12, in the match as the Seahawks avenged a loss last year in Philadelphia. Hunter made six saves for UNCW, while Drexel keeper Eve Badana came up with four stops. The Dragons will look to get back in the win column on Sunday afternoon. Drexel will drive to Atlanta, where they face Georgia State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
