Drexel's defense turned in a stellar performance as the Dragons shut down Georgia State and shutout the Panthers in Georgia, 2-0. Drexel picked up its eighth win of the season, the most in the program's history. The Dragons are now 8-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association matches.
The Dragons, who were coming off a 2-0 loss to UNCW on the first leg of this trip, broke their scoring drought with the first goal of the match in the 60th minute. Biz Matta sent in a cross that Sam Greenfield headed home for her third goal of the season. It proved to be the game winner, giving Greenfield game-winning goals on each of her scores this season. Drexel picked up an insurance goal in the closing minutes when freshman Gabby Dixon scored to make it 2-0. Megan Hammaker picked up her first assist on the season on Dixon's goal.
For the third straight match, the Dragons and their opponents played a scoreless first half. Shots were at a premium, as the teams combined for just six. Four of those were by the Dragons. Rebecca Toler made two first half saves keeping the Dragons off the board. Eve Badana, who picked up her sixth shoutout of the year, was forced to face just one shot on net and she turned that aside. Drexel had its best chance in the final minutes of the half, but Juliana Speroni's shot hit the cross bar as the match remained tied.
The Drexel defense gave up just two shots in the contest. The Panthers did not have a shot on goal in the second half. Offensively, Drexel managed just nine shots, but made the most of its scoring chances.
The Dragons will play their third consecutive road match on Thursday afternoon in Boston, Mass. Drexel visits Northeastern in an afternoon contest at Parsons Field beginning at 4 p.m.
