NASHVILLE - Drexel head coach Miranda Ervin recently completed her first year on the coaching staff of the Carolina Diamonds, a professional softball team with the National Pro Fastpitch league. A part of the staff which took over a struggling team mid-season, Ervin helped turn the Diamonds' season around, guiding them to the third seed in the recently-completed NPF playoffs. For their efforts, the staff was named the NPF Coaching Staff of the Year at the league's annual banquet.
The staff consists of head coach Lisa Navas, Ervin and assistant Lisa Dodd. Navas is currently the associate head coach at South Carolina, while Dodd is the head coach at UNLV.
Ervin and the coaching staff took over a 2-8 Diamonds team in late June, then swept a four-game series against Akron immediately upon taking over. Ultimately, the Diamonds would earn the three seed in the the league's tournament before falling to the No. 2 USSSA Pride, based out of Florida.
The NPF consists of teams in Chicago, Florida, Akron and Carolina. The 44-game season runs from June through mid-August, with teams playing four-game series each weekend at various sites near the teams' home bases. All four teams advance to the championship series, with three-game series in the first round featuring the top seed against the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed facing the No. 3 seed.
