No. 18 Field Hockey Outlasts No. 22 California, 3-2, in Overtime

Berkeley, Calif. – Freshman Mary Lynam scored the game-winning goal to give the Dragons an exciting 3-2 overtime victory against No. 22 California on Friday night at Maxwell Family Field. The Golden Bears outshout the Drexel, 13-9, and had 11 penalty corners to the Dragons' five. Drexel Field Hockey improved to 5-0 on the season, while California dropped to 2-3.
With just over eight minutes into the opening half, California's Lara Kruggel carried the ball into the circle and shot the ball into left side of the cage to give the Golden Bears' an early 1-0 lead. Senior captain Amanda Fleischut answered back with a goal from teammate Lindsay McArdles' pass to make it an even 1-1 game.
At 28:28, Drexel recorded its second goal after a long hit from Elise DiDonato was touched by one of the Golden Bears' sticks. California continued to test the Dragons' defense, but Drexel's Jantien Gunter made two saves in the last five minutes to help Drexel hold on to the 2-1 lead at half.
The Golden Bears opened up the second half on the attacking end. At 43:49, California's Nicole Wallstedt tied the game off of a pass from Rachelle Comeau. The Golden Bears had nine shots and seven corners in the second half, but the Dragons didn't allow a goal for the remainder of the half forcing the game into overtime.
Drexel opened up overtime with three penalty corners, but couldn't get the ball past opposing goalkeeper Joelle van Hoorn. In the 78th minute, Fleischut crossed the ball to Mary Lynam who beat van Hoorn from the right side for the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter posted six saves. She now has 22 stops on the season. California's Joelle van Hoorn made five saves.
Drexel Field Hockey will conclude its three-game West Coast trip at No. 16 Stanford on Sunday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. (PST).
