Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel wrestling squad fell to Iowa State, 31-12, and North Carolina, 24-10, in back-to-back home duals on Sunday. The Dragons move to 5-7 overall, while the Cyclones improve to 3-3 and the Tar Heels improve to 2-2 on the season.
Iowa State had jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead after three bouts when Shane Fenningham recorded a 5-3 decision at 149 to put the Dragons on the board. Austin Sommer followed with an 8-6 victory to bring Drexel to within five points. The Cyclones followed with a three-bout winning streak that featured two major decisions and a pin to increase Iowa State's lead to 25-6. Brandon Palik countered with a win-by-fall at 6:18 in the 197 bout, but it was not enough to defeat the deficit. The Cyclones finished up the dual with a pin in the 285 match to bring the final score to 31-12.
In the second dual of the day, the Dragons faced an 8-0 deficit after two matches. Frank Cimato came up strong in the 141 bout with a 5-3, come-from-behind decision decision against North Carolina's #6 ranked Evan Henderson to get Drexel their first points of the dual. Cimato was down 3-2 with just over 10 seconds remaining in the match when he turned an escape and a take down into a two-point lead and a victory. However, North Carolina extended their lead over the next five matches to put the score at 24-3. In the last two bouts of the day, Palik added a 13-0 major decision over UNC's Frank Abbondanza and Jon Max Wright earned a 5-2 decision over Cody Klempay, but the Dragons came up short to the Tar Heels, 24-10.
Next up, the Dragons will return to Fairfax, Va. to take on Old Dominion and conference opponent Binghamton on January 19. Then the Dragons will return home again on January 26 to take on Sacred Heart at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
