Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel's defense held Georgia State to just 28 percent shooting as the Dragons defeated the Panthers, 68-57, for their third straight win. Damion Lee scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and Frantz Massenat and Derrick Thomas added 15 and 14 points, respectively for the Dragons (8-11, 4-3). The Panthers fell to 5-4 in the CAA and 10-12 overall.
The Dragons trailed early in the game but closed the first half on a 10-4 run to take a 27-22 lead at intermission. Drexel would not trail again in the contest. The Panthers went the final 8:31 of the first half without a bucket, scoring all six of their points from the free throw line. In the half, the Panthers made just four field goals and shot 17 percent from the floor. They scored half of their 22 points from the line.
Drexel looked as though it would pull away a few times early in the second half, but each time the lead approached double digits, the Panthers would answer with a mini-run of its own. The Dragons finally pulled away by scoring eight straight points to go ahead, 54-42. Thomas started the run with a three-pointers, followed by a Lee jumper followed by a Lee three-pointer. Georgia State couldn't get any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Drexel was able to ice the game by sinking all eight of its free throws in the final 1:21 of the game.
Lee was 5-for-9 from the field in the second half and made four three pointers. It was the fifth time this season the sophomore has scored 20 or more points. Massenat was perfect in eight attempts from the line and handed out eight assists. As a team, the Dragons were 21-for-22 from the line.
Manny Atkins led the Panthers with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Devonta White added 14 points, while Rashaad Richardson made four three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Freshman R.J. Hunter was held to just eight points and 1-for-9 from the floor. He entered the game averaging 16.3 points per game.
The Dragons have a short turnaround as they will be back in action on Monday at the DAC. Drexel will face Delaware in a game that can be seen live on the NBC Sports Network beginning at 7 p.m.
