HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Head Coach Denise Zelenak recorded her 200th career victory as the Dragons topped Hofstra, 3-2, for the squads' first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season on Sunday afternoon. Junior Christina Conrad helped Drexel to a two-goal lead during the opening 35 minutes of play followed by another score from senior co-captain Elise DiDonato in the second half to secure the win. The squad outshot the Pride, 20-10, and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners. Drexel bettered its record to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
In the opening 5:30 of the contest, sophomore Lauren Hibshman sliced the ball inside the circle to Conrad, who tipped the incoming feed into the upper netting of the cage giving the Dragons a 1-0 advantage. Less than four minutes later, senior co-captain Lindsay McArdle connected with Conrad as she one-touched the ball past opposing goalkeeper Kaitlyn DeTuro. Drexel led 2-0 entering halftime.
Drexel continued to test Hofstra's defensive unit. With just eight minutes into the second half, senior co-captain Elise DiDonato moved towards the stroke-mark and deflected the ball into the goal from junior Chloe Pachuilo's pass. In the 50th minute of play, Hofstra's Claudia Marin Samper tipped the ball past junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter for the Pride's first goal of the day. Hofstra added another point nine minutes later. Despite Hofstra's late two-goal run, Drexel preserved the one-goal lead, 3-2, until the game clock expired.
Conrad tied her career-high with two goals. In the backfield, Gunter posted five key stops on Sunday totaling 69 saves on the season.
The Dragons will host Lafayette on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. and city-rival Temple on October 20 at 1:00 p.m. on Buckley Field. Sunday's contest marks Alumni Day.
