Swimming and Diving Defeat George Washington at Home

PHILADELPHIA- The Drexel men's and women's swimming and diving teams bested George Washington in Saturday's home meet. The men scored 183 to the Colonial's 108, while the women dominated 160-131. The Dragons are now 2-0 at home, and the men have yet to be defeated.
Relay teams were first on the boards for the Dragons, as Katie Duggan, Rachel Bernhardt, Brianna Bentz, and Aubrey Murray stopped the clock at 3:56.68 and crushed a 23 year old pool record in the 400 medley relay. They were soon followed by the men's 400 medley relay squad of Joel Berryman, Chad Schmidt, Kyle Lukens, and Alex Bagshaw, who took first with a speedy time of 3:27.08.
The first individual win for the men came from freshman Zoltan Gercsak in the 1000 free with a time of 9:49.22. In the 100 back, Berryman sliced through the water and landed first with a 52.54. Schmidt brought home another win for the team when he stopped the clock at 59.06 in the 100 breast. Mike Krohn also came up big when he defeated the competition in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:55.65, followed by teammate Lukens with a 1:55.93. The men dominated the 50 free, capturing all top finished. Bagshaw, Mike Shaeffer, and John Connolly collected first through third with times of 21.88, 22.29, and 22.37, respectively. Andrew Reimon would make his mark on the day in the 200 breast with a first place time of 2:09.71, followed by Chad Schmidt and Greg Oprendek in second and third, respectively. Lukens and Krohn would help keep the Dragons up as they dominated the 100 fly, Lukens touching the wall at 51.11 and Krohn close behind in 51.43.
On the women's side, Murray kicked the women off in the 200 free with a first place finish time of 1:54.09. In the 100 back, Gizem Yali finished in first with a 59.97 while teammate Katie Kapelsohn followed close behind for the second place finish with a 1:01.69. Bernhardt captured another win for the Dragons in the 100 breast, touching the wall at 1:06.43. The 50 free were a success for both squads, as the women landed the top two finished. Claudia Duguay took first in 24.60 and Duggan stopped the clock at 25.07 for second. Murray came back for another win in the 100 free with a time of 53.69, followed by teammate Bentz in the second position, and Duguay in the third. George Washington would take the next two races, but Bernhardt would bring it back for the team in the 200 breast with a winning time of 2:25.04.
The 200 free relay squads ended the meet much the same way they began it, with big wins. Bernhardt, Murray, Duguay, and Bentz pushed through to a first place finish with a time of 1:38.18. Alex Chialastri, Shaeffer, Bagshaw, Berryman brought home the final win for the Dragons with a time of 1:26.24.
The Dragons return to the pool on November 9 in an away meet against Binghamton.
