SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Director of Rowing Paul Savell was presented the 2013 Men's Collegiate Coach of the Year Award at the 21st annual Joy of Sculling Coaches Conference. The event was held on Friday, December 13 through December 14 in Saratoga Springs. The three-day conference allowed coaches to share their ideas and practices in order to develop a better understanding of integral coaching.
Since joining the coaching staff in 2007, Savell has led Drexel to unprecedented success at some of the most prestigious regattas in collegiate rowing, including the Henley Regatta and the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. In the fall of 2012, Savell was named the Schuylkill Navy Coach of the Year selected by collegiate, high school and club coaches throughout the Philadelphia region.
Just last year, Savell guided the Dragons to the most successful seasons in Drexel Crew history. In May of 2013, Drexel won the overall team title, the men's point trophy and the Men's Varsity 8 Gold Medal at the 2013 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. Savell sent a program-high 12 boats to the semifinals and advanced six of nine shells to the grand finals. The Dragons earned four gold medals, a silver and a bronze, giving Drexel their highest medal total at a Dad Vail in school history. Savell guided the women's second varsity eight to back-to-back gold medal victories. Savell also sent three men's eights to the IRA National Championships in Sacramento.
The Dragons continued to dominate the water this fall. Savell guided the men's varsity eight to a first-place finish out of 40 participating crews in the collegiate eights event, which marked the best finish in program history at the 2013 Head of the Charles Regatta. The women's second varsity eight also placed in the Top 10 earning sixth overall out of 29 entries, while the women's varsity eight stopped the clock 24th. Drexel also won the overall team points trophy for the fourth straight year at the 2013 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
