HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Drexel women's basketball team fell for the third-straight game on Wednesday, dropping a 65-60 decision at Colgate. Four Dragons scored in double figures for the first time since the 2011-12 season, but it was not enough as the host Raiders held off Drexel's repeated comeback efforts in the second half.
Colgate led nearly the entire way, but could never establish much distance between itself and Drexel as the Raiders' largest lead was seven. The Dragons, who had only led 3-2, took a 53-51 lead with 3:40 to play before a 5-0 Colgate run grabbed the lead back.
Meghan Creighton led Drexel with 14 points. Rachel Pearson and Fiona Flanagan added 13 apiece, with Flanagan notching all of hers in the second half and chipping in a team-best eight rebounds. Sarah Curran had 10 points and six boards.
Drexel slipped behind early, hitting just two of its first 10 shots and starting 1-for-8 from three-point range. After Colgate took a 14-7 lead with 11:13 remaining in the first half, the Dragons responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Creighton to slice the lead down to one. The Raiders responded with the game's next three points, and then after Curran drained a three-pointer to get it back to a one-point game, the Raiders went on a methodical 6-0 run over the next 5:57 to get their lead back up to seven.
That was a pattern that would repeat itself often on Wednesday night, as the Dragons kept Colgate from pulling away, but generally could not come up with a big bucket to erase the deficit completely. That finally changed with just 5:54 to play when Creighton buried a three-pointer to tie things up at 49, the first tied score of the day. On the Dragons' next possession, Abby Redick hit one of two free throws to put Drexel on top.
The Dragons would later take a two-point lead when Flanagan drained a jumper from the left corner with 3:40 to play, but Colgate immediately responded with a three-pointer, then got another bucket after a defensive stop. Drexel had its chances to even the score back up, but the Dragons' usually reliable free-throw shooting let them down on Wednesday as they hit just 8-of-14 from the charity stripe, all of which came in the second half.
The Dragons will continue life on the road with their next outing, Sunday afternoon at American. Drexel will tip off with the Eagles, a second-straight foe out of the Patriot League, at 2:00 p.m. in Washington.
