Steve Kasprzyk Wins Silver Medal at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup I

Penrith, Australia – Drexel University alumnus Steve Kasprzyk and the United States men's eight boat won silver medals at the first international event of the season at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup I. The event took place on March 22 through March 24 at the Sydney International Regatta Center in Australia.
Coxswain Stephen Young (Tampa, Fla.), Michael Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.), Tom Peszek (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Tom Dethlefs (Lawrenceville, N.J.), Drexel's Steve Kasprzyk (Cinnaminson, N.J.), Brandon Shald (Sausalito, Calif.), Nareg Guregian (North Hills, Calif.), David Banks (Potomac, Md.) and Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.) clocked in a second-place time of 5:31.73 to Great Britain's winning time of 5:29.90.
While at Drexel University, Kasprzyk walked on to the crew team in 2000 with no prior rowing experience. With his athleticism and determination, Kasprzyk made an immediate impact on the program and helped the men's freshman eight qualify at the 2001 IRA National Championships. The following season, he rowed in the men's varsity eight boat that placed fifth in the finals at the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta.
Kasprzyk went on to compete at a national level. In 2007, he won the pair at the Senior National Team Trials. Two years later, he joined the men's eight boat and captured the USRowing Elite National title. In 2011, he placed first in the pair event at the USRowing Elite Nationals.
In 2007, he earned seventh place for the pair at the World Rowing Championships. He went on to take seventh place at the 2009 World Rowing Cup in Lucerne and finished ninth at the 2009 World Rowing Championships. In 2010, Kasprzyk earned fifth place in the eight at the 2010 E.ON Hanse Canal Cup. He helped the men's eight capture a medal at 2011 Pan American Games held in Guzman City, Mexico. Most recently, Kasprzyk and the U.S. men's eight earned a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Together, the United States won medals in five of the six events 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup I. Australia is the first stop of the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup circuit. The second stage will be held June 21-23 in Eton, Great Britain. The final stage will take place July 12-14 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
