DURHAM, N.C. – The 17th-nationally ranked Drexel field hockey team defeated Indiana, 2-0, in the season opener hosted at Duke University. Junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter had a standout performance and earned her seventh career shutout on Saturday afternoon. Meghan Plank and Margaux Lourtie each tallied a goal in the victory. Drexel outshot Indiana, 22-12, and had 11 corners to the Hoosiers' five. The Dragons will conclude the road trip against the No. 10 Blue Devils on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Jack Katz Stadium.
In the opening minutes of play, the Hoosiers' Audra Heilman looked to have a fast-break into the Dragons' defensive end until junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter stepped up to meet the incoming Hoosier at the top of the circle. Gunter broke up the play and followed with another quick save to keep Indiana off of the scoreboard. The Dragons kept the pressure high on the attacking end and drew back-to-back corners. In the following corner attempt at the 20th-minute mark, sophomore Mary Lynam took a straight shot from the top of the circle. Junior Meghan Plank dove toward the rebound and punched the ball into the back of the cage to give Drexel a 1-0 lead. Drexel continued to control possession throughout the first half, and held a one-goal lead after 35 minutes of play. The Dragons outshot the Hoosiers, 13-2, and held a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners in the first half.
Gunter remained sharp in the cage during the second half. In the opening minutes, Indiana tested the Dragons' defense earning a corner, however, Indiana's shot attempts were turned away by Gunter. With 14:42 remaining in the second half, Margaux Lourtie received a pass from Chloe Pachuilo and fired the ball into the left corner of the goal to give Drexel a 2-0 lead. At 8:35, Gunter slid towards Indiana's Mariella Grote and redirected the ball out of the circle. Gunter made three more kick saves to secure the shutout. The Dragons held onto the two-goal lead until the clock expired.
Freshmen Jessica McCarthy and Idrienne Walker along with junior transfer Rachel Sumfest took the field for the first time as a Dragon.
The Dragons will face the Blue Devils on September 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the final contest of the weekend in Durham, North Carolina. Duke opened the season with a 4-0 victory over Indiana on Friday night at home. Click here for live stats for Sunday's game and here for live video.
