DURHAM, N.C. – The No.17 Drexel field hockey team fell to No. 10 Duke, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Jack Katz Stadium. Duke created a three-goal cushion during the first half, and was able to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the contest. Freshman Idrienne Walker scored her first collegiate goal on Sunday afternoon. Duke outshot the Dragons, 12-7, and held a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners. Drexel split the weekend finishing 1-1 overall.
At the start of the game, both squads each took turns working the ball through the midfield with only one shot credited to the Blue Devils. After 15 minutes of scoreless play, Duke's Heather Morris received a pass from teammate Abby Beltrani, and lifted the ball into the middle-netting of the cage to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
With 10:32 showing on the clock, junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter blocked an incoming shot despite a screen of players in front of her pads. The ball was sailing wide of the goal, until Duke's Cherry Seaborn extended her stick and redirected the loose ball into the back of the cage. Less than a minute later, the Blue Devils' Heather Morris scored off of a reverse shot to broaden Duke's lead to three goals, 3-0.
In opening minutes of the second half, Drexel continued to generate plays on the attacking end with two shots just wide of the post. At 13:47, freshman Idrienne Walker reverse chipped the ball into the top right of the cage helping Drexel bring the game back within two goals, 3-1. With less than five minutes to go in the second half, Duke's Heather Morris recovered her own rebound after Gunter blocked the incoming drag flick and recorded the games' final point, 4-1.
Gunter had five stops against the Blue Devils. She now has 11 saves on the season.
The Dragons will host Saint Joseph's on Friday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m. at Buckley Field before traveling to Maryland on September 8. Sunday's game is set for 2:00 p.m.
