9/6/2013 7:44:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - The No. 17 Drexel field hockey team defeated Saint Joseph's, 2-1, in its home opener held at Buckley Field on Friday night. Junior Christina Conrad tied her career-best with two goals, including the game-winning point scored off of a penalty corner. The Dragons had 25 shots to the Hawk's three and held an 18-2 advantage in penalty corners. Drexel will enter Sunday's contest against No. 2 Maryland with a 2-1 overall record.
Saint Joseph's capitalized on a penalty corner to take an early 1-0 lead against the Dragons. With 29:41 showing on the clock, the Hawk's Jordan Martin faked the initial shot and dished the ball to teammate Eva Gekas, who directed the ball into the cage from the top of the circle. The Dragons dominated play during the remainder of the first half, but were unable to get the ball past opposing goalkeeper Rachel Barnell. Drexel trailed by one-point after outshooting the Hawks', 14-2, and drawing 10 corners to Saint Joseph's two.
The Dragons continued to test the Hawks' defense. At 22:36 in the second half, Drexel's Allyson Fuller fired a shot from the top of the circle during a penalty corner. Teammate Christina Conrad stationed herself in front of Barnell's pads and tipped the incoming ball into the bottom corner of the goal. Less than 10 minutes later, Conrad successfully converted on a penalty stroke securing Drexel's first home victory of the 2013 season.
Fuller registered her first career assist against Saint Joseph's. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Jantien Gunter had two saves. She now has 13 stops on the season. Saint Joseph's Rachel Barnell finished with 15 saves as the Hawks' dropped to 0-3 overall.
