PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's soccer team fell to Liberty, 3-0, on Friday night in the final game of the Drexel Athletics Department's triple header at the Vidas Athletic Complex. The Dragons are now 2-2-1 overall, while the Flames improve their record to 3-1. The loss ends a 17-game unbeaten streak at home for Drexel.
Liberty scored their first goal in the fifth minute as Alanna Dunkle scored unassisted. As Drexel goalie Eve Badana came out of the goal to challenge a Liberty charge, Andi Stampone stepped in to kick an attempt out of the goal but Dunkle retrieved the ball and put it back to get the Flames on the board.
Dunkle also scored Liberty's second goal as she broke in on the right side of the box and put the ball into the far left corner to take a 2-0 lead with 31:36 to go in the first half.
The Dragons came close to getting on the board as Megan Hammaker took a dead-on shot in the 29th minute, but Liberty keeper Holly VanNoord made a diving save to keep them scoreless.
The Flames final goal came by freshman Julia Degatti off an assist from Lauren Nichols in the 80th minute. The Dragons were not able to overcome the 3-0 deficit, giving them their first home loss since October 30, 2010.
Drexel outshot Liberty 17-7. Badana had two saves in the losing effort, while VanNoord tallied six.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday as they host the Longwood Lancers at noon. The game is a part of a doubleheader, with the Drexel men's soccer team taking on Stony Brook at 3:00 p.m. Video and live stats will be available for both games through Drexel Game Central.
