Elon, N.C. – After a 90-minute weather delay, the Drexel women's soccer team defeated new Colonial Athletic Association opponent Elon, 1-0 in their first meeting in women's soccer program history on Friday evening. With the win, the Dragons extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.
The Dragons came out strong in the first half, getting off six shots to the Phoenix' two. Despite these efforts, Drexel and Elon went into halftime with the game still scoreless.
Megan Hammaker was able to find the goal in the 68th minute to get the Dragons on the board. Hammaker sank the ball into the left corner of the net from 20 yards out on the right side. The goal, which marked Hammaker's third of the season, proved to be the game-winner as the Drexel defense held off the Phoenix for the remainder of the contest.
Junior keeper Kelsie Fye recorded one save in the victory, while Elon's Sydney Branson tallied eight. The win marks the Dragons' sixth shutout in a row. Fye has not allowed a goal in 639 minutes, a program record, with the last goal against her coming in the 31st minute of Drexel's two-overtime draw with Syracuse on Sept. 14.
The Dragons outshot the Phoenix, 11-5. With the victory, Drexel improves to 6-5-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play, while Elon moves to 4-9 and 0-5 against CAA opponents.
Drexel returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 when they visit William & Mary. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.
