Williamsburg, Va. - The Drexel women's soccer team battled past William & Mary to earn a 3-2 overtime victory over the Tribe on Sunday afternoon. The win solidifies a 2-0 weekend for the Dragons in conference play and extends their unbeaten streak to eight games in a row. It also marks the first time in program history that Drexel has defeated William & Mary on the Tribe's home turf.
The first half saw seven shots from the Tribe and four from the Dragons, but as halftime approached the game remained scoreless. William & Mary was first to get on the board in the 59th minute as Emory Camper found the lower right part of the net. Just 21 seconds later, however, the Dragons took the ball up the field as Civanni Moss connected to Jacki Sieder, who was able to find Madison Dunn in the box. Dunn then headed the ball into the net to tie the game back up at 1-1.
The game remained tied into the 87th minute Lauren Stollar found the net for her fourth goal of the season. Moss kicked the ball over to Stollar, who sent the ball towards a wide open net to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.
As time winded down, the Dragons made efforts to keep the ball away from the Tribe. However, with less than a minute remaining William & Mary regained control and made one last effort. The Tribe took the ball quickly down the field and Camper was able to get off a shot with one second remaining that went into the lower right corner past a diving Kelsie Fye, which forced overtime between the two teams.
Overtime saw multiple possesion changes. In the 99th minute, the Tribe committed a foul which set the Dragons up for a free kick taken by Alyssa Findlay. Findlay sent the ball into the box, where Dunn got a touch on it before Melissa Chapman found it and sank the ball into the net to secure a Drexel victory.
Fye recorded five saves in the victory, while the Tribe's Caroline Casey tallied three. Fye wrapped up a record-breaking 697 minute streak without allowing a goal with Camper's goal in the 59th minute.
The Tribe outshot the Dragons, 19-10 on the game. The victory moves Drexel into first place in the Colonial Athletic Association as the Dragons improve to 7-5-2 overall and 4-0-1 in conference action. The Tribe moves to 10-3-1 overall on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
Next up, Drexel returns home to host James Madison at Vidas Field on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
