Women's Soccer Falls to James Madison in Double Overtime

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Drexel women's soccer team fell to James Madison in a late-in-the-season conference battle for first place on Friday evening. The Dragons fought their way through regulation and then held the Dukes scoreless into the second overtime before James Madison scored the game-winning goal. The loss ends the Dragons' eight game unbeaten streak that they had upheld since they tied Syracuse on Sept. 14.
Strong defense was played by both teams throughout the first quarter and the game remained scoreless into halftime. Drexel got on the board first in the 72nd minute as Melissa Chapman found the goal. Megan Hammaker sent a corner kick into the box towards Chapman, who was able to head it into the back of the net. Just 45 seconds after the reset, however, James Madison pushed the ball up the field and Allie Bunner was able to score off a pass from Ashley Herndon.
The game remained tied throughout regulation and then through the first overtime. In the 108th minute, James Madison's Katie Hyland sent a strong shot in that went wide of the goal. While it looked in the moment like the Dragons had escaped what could have been a game-winner for James Madison, the Dukes' Rachel Ivey track the ball down before it went out-of-bounds and all in one motion sank the ball into the net to give James Madison the sudden victory.
The Dukes outshot the Dragons, 21-12 throughout the contest. Junior keeper Kelsie Fye recorded 10 saves in the losing effort, while James Madison's Kate Courter tallied three. The loss moves Drexel to 7-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in conference. James Madison improves to 10-6, 5-1 CAA and is now tied with Northeastern for first place in conference.
Drexel returns to action on Sunday, when they will host Towson on Senior Day. The contest, which marks the last home game of the regular season, is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
