ELON, N.C. - The Drexel men's soccer team's first-ever trip to new conference mate Elon saw the Dragons fall to the Phoenix, 2-0. Elon, which came into the game tied for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association, scored twice in the first half to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Drexel (5-7-3, 1-3-1) was unable to follow up on its first CAA victory, earned on Wednesday night against James Madison. The Dragons were outshot by the Phoenix 18-11, coming up with just one corner compared to seven for Elon. The Dragons were able to get three shots on goal, two of which were taken by John Grosh.
Elon took the lead in the 18th minute when Nathan Diehl found Caue Da Silva, who scored from 10 yards out. In the 42nd minute, the Phoenix followed that up with a goal when Chad Craig finished a pass from Jonathan Coleby.
Grosh had two of the Dragons' best looks in the final 20 minutes of play, but was not able to convert either. The first, in the 71st minute, sailed over the crossbar. He then tested Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean one tick into the 81st minute, but Dean was up to the challenge as the shot, which turned out to be the Dragons' last of the evening, was stopped.
Drexel will return to action on Wednesday night when the Dragons visit Hofstra. That game will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
