Crew Defends Head of the Schuylkill Title for Fifth Straight Year

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew defended its overall team points title at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta for the fifth consecutive year on Saturday, Oct. 25 on the Schuylkill River. The Dragons claimed three races, taking first in the men's freshmen eight, men's second varsity eight and women's second varsity eight
Drexel's deep freshmen class kicked off competition on Saturday with a win from the men's freshmen eight "A" in the Demo Vespoli boat with a 13:23.48, topping 32 boats. The "B" in the Joseph Greipp boat finished in fourth with a time of 13:45.87.
The women's freshmen eight followed with an eighth place finish with a time of 16:08.87 in the Marlene Buckley boat. The University of Connecticut paced the field with a 15:22.
Drexel swept the second varsity eight races on the day. The men's "A" bested the field with a time of 13:06.08 in the Lois Krall boat. The "B" followed closely behind in third with a time of 13:26.20 in the Joseph Greipp boat.
The women's "A" topped the 31-boat field with a time of 15:04.51 in the Maria Papadakis boat. The "B" finished in 16:42 in the Marlene Buckley boat.
Concluding the Dragons' day were the varsity eights. The men's "A" was narrowly edged by Vesper by four seconds, finishing in second with a time of 12:35.71 in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat. The "B" boat finished 11th in the Vince Vidas boat.
The Dragons' women's varsity eight capped off the day in third place with a time of 14:27.68, just .16 seconds behind Vesper for second. They raced in the Marlene Buckley II boat.
The Dragons will return to the water when they conclude their fall season on Nov. 8 at the Frostbite Regatta in West Windsor, N.J.
