WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The two-time defending regular season Colonial Athletic Association champion Drexel men's soccer team dropped its conference opener on Saturday evening, falling 3-1 to William & Mary in a rematch of last season's CAA championship game. The Tribe, which fell in that title game to the Dragons at Vidas Field last November, got revenge with two first-half goals before adding a third late to seal the victory. Jameson Detweiler netted his second goal of the season for Drexel in the 88th minute, providing the Dragons' lone offense of the evening.
The Dragons (4-5-2, 0-1-0) took the game's first three shots, but were unable to get any on net as two sailed wide and one was blocked by the Tribe defense. Just over 14 minutes into the action, William & Mary got its first offensive look on a corner. Inserted by Chris Albiston, it was headed by William Eskay but did not redirect towards the net. Instead, it stayed up for Michael Teiman, who headed it in past the grasp of Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach.
Just before halftime, the Tribe struck again. This time, Ryan Flesch gained control near midfield and passed in to Josh West. West, on a breakaway, dribbled into the box and fired from Afflerbach's right, beating him low and to the far post to put the Tribe up 2-0 in the 43rd minute. William & Mary went into the break up by that score.
In the 77th minute, the Tribe added a third to solidify their lead. This time, Afflerbach misplayed a ball that had come into the box. He came out to the corner of the box to his right, and lost control of the ball. Jackson Eskay stole it away and curled it into an essentially empty net.
Late in the action, the Dragons got on the board and avoided a shutout thanks to a corner of their own. Connor Goldsmith put it in play, sending it perfectly into the front of the net to Jameson Detweiler, who headed it straight down and into the lower right corner. It was the Dragons' 12th shot of the night, as they were outshot by the Tribe 15-12.
Drexel will be on the road for its next outing as well, as the Dragons visit Northeastern on Wednesday night. That game will kick off at 6:00 p.m.
