Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Overtime Defeat at Northeastern

BOSTON - The Drexel men's soccer team fell in overtime at Northeastern on Wednesday night, 1-0. The Dragons managed six shots including three on goal, but saw a score by the Huskies' Ackim Mpofu provide the difference in the 97th minute as the Dragons fell to 0-2 to open Colonial Athletic Association play.
Drexel (4-6-2, 0-2-0) was defeated in overtime for a second time this season. The Dragons, the two-time defending CAA regular season champions, dropped their first two league games for the first time since 2011.
The Dragons had their best chance to score midway through the second half. In the 76th minute, having already tested Northeastern goalkeeper Jonathan Thuresson once earlier in the period, Drexel got the ball to senior midfielder Michele Pataia. He fired a shot on goal that Thuresson was able to turn away. The rebound was not controlled, however, and seconds later Maty Brennan had another good look at giving the Dragons the lead. His shot, too, was batted away by Thuresson as the game remained scoreless.
That sequence was similar to an earlier flurry, where Northeastern peppered Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach twice in just under a minute in the ninth and 10th minutes of the contest. Afflerbach stonewalled the Huskies for his only two saves of the contest.
Northeastern controlled the extra time, earning a corner and taking two shots prior to the fateful goal. With just 3:02 remaining in the first overtime, Mpofu took a pass from Harry Swartz and fired into the lower right corner, past a diving Afflerbach to net his first goal of the season and the only one the Huskies would need on the evening. Northeastern moved to 2-0-0 in league play with the victory.
Drexel will attempt to get on track when it opens the home portion of its conference slate on Saturday. The Dragons will host the College of Charleston at Vidas Field at 4:00 p.m.
